What Do Freshwater Puffer Fish Eat? The Complete Feeding Guide
Feeding puffer fish is one of the most enjoyable — and most important — parts of keeping them. Get it wrong and you'll face overgrown teeth, malnutrition, and a very grumpy fish.
Why Diet Matters So Much
Puffer fish have fused teeth that grow continuously throughout their lives. Without hard-shelled foods to grind against, their teeth overgrow and they can no longer eat — a serious and painful condition.
Best Foods for Freshwater Puffers
- Snails — The #1 staple. Bladder snails, ramshorn snails, and Malaysian trumpet snails are all excellent. Many puffer keepers maintain a snail colony just to feed their fish.
- Clams & mussels — Offered in the half-shell, these are great for larger species.
- Frozen bloodworms — A good supplement, but not a primary food source.
- Shrimp — Ghost shrimp and small prawns are relished by most species.
- Crayfish claws — Excellent for larger puffers that need extra beak-wearing food.
Foods to Avoid
- Flake or pellet food (most puffers refuse it and it lacks nutritional value for them)
- Feeder goldfish (disease risk and poor nutrition)
- Freeze-dried foods as a staple (low moisture content)
How Often to Feed
- Juveniles: Once daily
- Adults: Every other day (overfeeding leads to obesity and water quality issues)
Signs of Overgrown Teeth
If your puffer is struggling to eat, dropping food, or you can visibly see overgrown beak-like teeth, it's time for a trim. This is a delicate procedure — consult an aquatic vet or experienced fishkeeper.
